Use The Platinum Rule for Online Blog Marketing

You've heard of the Golden Rule that states, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." And, to alter that command to be much more useful, practical and powerful, consider the Platinum Rule. It states, "Do unto others as they would have you do unto them." Instead of writing what we know and telling our audience what to do, we can better serve them and ourselves when we consider what they want and need. They have specific concerns, problems or challenges about a topic (your topic) they want solutions for.

How Can you Really Know What your Audience Wants?

One. Ask them!

Send them an informal email survey posing 4-5 areas of your expertise that they want more answers to. For instance, I recently polled my opt-in list of 5000+ subscribers who want book project information. They would return by email the 2 most important topics they wanted answers on. My samples: 1. How to get started and write engaging chapters and copy that promotes. 2. How to build my promotion platform to sell myself and my books. 3. How to use Social Media to get more visibility and credibility. 4. How to choose which social media will bring me the most results and not waste time. 5. How to increase my service and book sales. What do I need and where do I start? When the results came back, I found that half my list wanted more promotion strategies, actions and skills, while half wanted help to get started on writing a book. So, I applied the Platinum Rule and responded each month with three writing skills blog articles and three book marketing and promotion blog articles. When you know your audiences' specific questions, you can write solutions they will be so happy to receive. This, in turn, creates trust in you as the savvy go to person in your field.

Two. For each article or blog post you write, ask yourself, "Who is my primary audience for this article?

Picture your specific audience and aim it at them. In addition, take care with your keyword phrases in your blog article title. Notice this article includes the low competition keywords, "Online Blog Marketing." to use "Blog Marketing" alone would mean with all the others using this same phrase, ours might not be on page one in Google rankings. We strive to get our blogs noticed by Google (stay on page one) and also we want to serve our audience of business people who want more financial success. For each audience you aim your blog to, develop the appropriate style for them. For instance, most audiences want how to information that helps them solve a concern. If you aim at the novice, make your sentences short and punchy and easy to read. Stop all pontificating! Replace the pompous "utilize" with the shorter form of "use." Avoid multi syllable words when a short word will do the job! Easy-to-read wins fans and eventually sales.

Three. Know why you are writing this blog article.

Do you write it to raise awareness? To give the why something is important to your audience? To introduce your audience to your niche? To give beginners or seasoned people in your field information that will help them succeed? In one recent coaching session, my author therapist realized she had three audiences in mind for her information: to help young binge eaters, anorexics, and bulimics. Together, we solved it and she's writing three shorter eBooks along with similar specific blog titles to market her home study programs and her new books.

Four. Know what information your audience craves and why.

Deliver in demand information to your fans. They will reward you. Amazing results come from questions your audience wants answers to. You post the question in your title and the answers in your numbered tips or solutions.

Five. Build trust in you from continuously giving your audience what they want.

For 12 years, my blog posts and articles have helped my author / business-person audience to know how to write a saleable book and other copy. When I learn something of value to help them, I pass it on - giving without expectation, although the committed ones eventually read my books and become coaching clients. Keep your readers coming back to you again and again. Pay attention to what they want and need. So many online people aren't sure of what they need to do, be, or have now and later. Online Blog Marketing 6 Action Steps – It’s Published, Now What?

You just wrote an informative and insightful blog post. Now what? It's a shame when not many will see it. To monetize your online blog marketing and make sure large numbers of your audience see it, you'll need to take some further steps. Like promoting a book or a website, your blog needs to be marketed too. That is, if you want to increase eventual business sales. Remember this social media adage by Guy Kawasaki--You have to be seen to sell!

Here's 6 Action Steps to Monetize your Blog

1. Make sure your online audience sees it.

Stop waiting for Godot or Santa Claus. Only you and your team can make this happen. If you don't know what kind of blog post your audience wants, seek out a writing coach who knows blog writing. If you don't have the techie part wired, then seek out a reliable source for that. If you aren't already in Social Media, join Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

2. Leverage your blog posts--Get them noticed.

Remember, you blog is like a website. If you don't market it, not many will see your good news. And, to get those high search engine rankings, you must do several things: One, to include a top keyword phrase in your title and the first few lines. For this blog, I used these keywords, "Online Blog Marketing." I keep a list that I got from Google Adwords.com research of all the blog categories I write about next to my computer. It takes just a minute to choose a good one. Two, you need to share more than a few blogs and their URLs. Don't quit too soon. This takes time to develop. Aim for 50 to get a body of work that makes you credible as the "go to" person in your niche. Build this 50 to 100, then more over time. You can do this by posting 1-2 blog posts each week in Twitter, FB and LinkedIn. This one action can more than double your present web/blog traffic in just a few months. My own went from 2500 to over 5800 in May to August of 2011. The more useful blogs I write, the more Google lists me in the first page, and the more targeted visitors who want what I offer, come to my site and stay. The reason? A lot of smart free content they can use.

3. Post a promotional blurb in front of your blog URL when you Tweet it.

For instance, after I published at my business site a how to blog post on Facebook book marketing, I wrote this 140 character tweet: "Sell more books with FB--See http://bookcoaching.com/wp/10-facebook-marketing-tips-to-sell-your-book/" Since you only have 140 characters, you may need to shorten your blog URL. Use tinyurl.com for this task. It takes just a minute. You type in your blog's long URL and they make it much shorter! So you have room for more copy that sells it.

4. Make your blog's tweet reach even a bigger audience.

If you want even more of your audience to see your blog, add an appropriate hash tag within the 140 character limits. To the above example, I added #bookmarketing. You can place the hash tag anywhere in your tweet. You can add as many appropriate hash tags as you have room for them.

5. Use Hootsuite.com and schedule a whole month's tweets ahead if you like.

HootSuite leverages your blog posts. When you send two tweets a day (60 a month), they end up on your Facebook fan page (business page) and you can set it up to update LinkedIn as well. Two a day is not many, so you audiences will welcome those and maybe comment on them in your Facebook fan page. That's what you want--comments that help you interact with your fans and let them know you care. Intersperse your blog blurb with questions aimed at your audience to get them interacting and involved.

6. Expand your blog presence on LinkedIn several ways.

First, go to your profile and check out the window that is where you and others write in an update. The update can be pictures, a new blog announcement, a video, or a tip for your particular audience. You need to update this window once a day or at least once a week. Second, after you join 5-10 groups that relate to your book or business, go to discussion window of each one. Write the title first (will be the live link to your blog at your site). Then, write a few lines to hook your reader to want to keep reading. They could include a question on where your audience is now (a problem, concern or challenge). They could be a thesis that includes the benefit of reading more of this blog.
Like all marketing, you need to give your blog readers a reason to keep reading, finish, and leave a comment, a question or go to a link you've provided that allows them to take more of you home with them through a newsletter or joining your site for further gems from you either weekly or less often. I recommend weekly--three informational blogs plus one irresistible offer from your books, audios, or videos. That ratio is a good balance of giving and receiving. Warning: Be sure to not be self-promotional in your blogs. Leave that for your short bio and link to something wonderful at your site beneath the post. Include some humor if possible. I started adding, "Make me smile today--leave me a comment or question!" Once you have built up a body of work, you can offer to guest blog after you have established rapport and left some useful comments. One step at a time works well. Finally, remember your blog posts reflect YOU. So make them irresistible, well thought out, and edited. Write to serve your audience, and they will keep reading you and possibly buying from you.
