    Great points all. I'd add one that really annoys me and has me hitting the delete button without reading. That is not paragraphing the post or comment on LinkedIn so it is in one long chunk of copy. It's just too hard to stop and read when I have 40 or so messages.

    "Just be careful that your message doesn’t come across as a sales pitch – that’s not the way to make a good impression on a new contact." This and the rest of the article certainly are words of wisdom. I think with the rapid growth of social networking many people are jumping on board without understanding the reason for and proper use of the sites. Often people think the only way to let people know about their work is to make the inevitable sales pitch. Most of us do not want to hear one more sales pitch especially if we don't even know the "pitcher".
